Visual effects have become the standard in today's film world. There are few limits left, and many producers and directors are also already proactively using this technology in their productions.

While visual effects often took place as part of the film finish or as practical miniatures in the 80s and 90s, they experienced a wave of digitization at the turn of the millennium. But the graphics capabilities were not yet up to snuff, often resulting in a very synthetic look.

Today, people have rowed back a bit and are working with both traditional and current or forward-looking methods.

3D models are no longer created from scratch, but are often based on 3D scans or "kitbash sets." Similarly, while many objects such as vehicles are still animated "by hand," digital characters are either fully or partially driven by motion-capture data.

However, visual effects are also used in "low effects" productions, such as for hologram displays, retouching, & digital makeup as well as for set extensions.
